    Albert the Gorilla

Written by Cliff on Friday 29 August 2003 at 12:00 pm
Allow me to introduce to you all: Albert. The Gorilla. He resides in my office here in Shanghai guarding important documents and information. Coincidentally, he has also trained in the Congo before his arrival here – crushing craniums of intruders and prisoners. I had the honour of photographing him in the flesh. Here he is scowling at the lens but at most other times, he’s swinging around the tables and chairs in the office leaving banana skins in his wake.

He has built a website himself and you can find it in the links at the right hand side of this page.

    Picture Gallery Overhaul

Written by Cliff on Wednesday 27 August 2003 at 12:03 pm

Dear viewers, in anticipation of a massive upload situation in the following weeks, I am taking down the picture gallery for a while – while organization is still easy. The gallery will still be accessible but there may not be any pictures inside. We’ll tell you when the gallery is fully functional again.

Well, I’d like to know: which font you prefer for the main body of this page; serif or sans. Serif are those like garamond and times new roman. Sans are those like Arial and Verdana.

    Sunny Streak

Finally, after a whole week and a half of overcast sky and occasional rain, the sky has cleared to reveal the sun – and the heat. It’s a little warmer with the sun out but still better than when I first stepped off the plane. sunnystreet.jpg

    From 40 to 20

It’s really cold out there in Shanghai right now. It was a scorching 40 degrees a few days ago and now, it’s just 22 degrees with a wind-chill factor. I haven’t seen such a change in this part of the world before, I suppose I have to go shopping for my Autumn clothes now.

    Crossing the Road

Written by Cliff on Friday 8 August 2003 at 12:28 pm

roadCrossing.jpgSometimes, I cross the road. Actually, I cross the road at least 10 times every day. One of the first things you’ll notice in Shanghai is how dangerous it is to cross the road (we’ll mention driving later). Unlike Hong Kong, where most people can manage walking across a road without looking, we foreigners in Shanghai have to maintain constant vigilance on (and off) the roads.

    Spotlife in Shanghai

Written by Cliff on Wednesday 6 August 2003 at 11:36 am

In this huge city, I live like this.

I open the front door of my humble home and stumble to the bathroom. Dang it won’t flush – again, so I change and wash my face and hurry downstairs in the lift that changes speed randomly. I try to run to the bus stop. Cars and people move recklessly, crashing about. People are knocked about on the road, falling over into a bloody mess. Shouts are exchanged and shots are fired. I cover my ears and board the bus. We’re packed like canned fish. Jostling about for space that never exited. We arrive and I am ejected from the vehicle and I watch while people pile like ants from the moving oven. I enter a sea of calm as I get into the office.

Lunch break. I step outside and the smell of melting rubber wafts from the cars parked outside. My shins become wet as sweat flushes down my knee. I make my way across the road, dodging the ludicrous traffic of speeding buses and bicycles which go wherever they want – beeping and ringing instead of slowing down. Flies buzz around the hot buns and noodles cooking in an unknown broth. I take it all into my stomach and rush back upstairs – to face the flicker of the screen.

    where I live

I got home weary from work and as I opened the curtains, golden rays streamed into the living room – lifting the spirits of the damp and stale air. I live here. On the 24th floor of heaven.
