    Simple Things

Written by Cliff on Wednesday 25 October 2006 at 10:31 pm

There are simple things that I cannot understand. Minor quibbles not worth a squabble, but if they are so minor, then, why? Why do they bring tears to my eyes when I think about them? Why is it so difficult to see a reassuring smile every day you wake up? Why don’t family say nice things to each other? Why is family nicer to those outside the family than those inside? Have we all gone insane? Why do I even have to write about this? Is the urban city so distorted, so devoid of basic values that we resort to our work so we can forget all about these simple things? What happens when we stop working to go back to the place we once called home? Who will be there to welcome us and bring us into their arms? If only our little worlds were not derived from such simple things…

Hong Kong passed its first anti-smoking law yesterday, banning smoking in all public indoor and specified outdoor areas. This means that my university is finally smoke free; the escalator from Central to my home is smoke free; all beaches are smoke free. Isn’t that revolutionary? I think our right to clean air has just received a kickstart.

    On Intention

Written by Cliff on Saturday 14 October 2006 at 10:39 pm

It is essential to look at intention. There are two kinds of intention: subjective intention, meaning what the guy actually thinks; and objective intention, which is what the factual matrix points to. Where the subjective and objective tests give conflicting results, the real (read: subjective) intention is to be preferred although the objective test is relevant to help determine what that real intention is.

Its great to clarify this point, Turnbull, but I think there ought to be a better way…

    On wives' evidence

    …it is extremely distasteful …
what can the poor wife do other than back her husband up as much as she possible can.
This is not a criticism of her evidence at all…
