How to study – 6 tips

Written by Cliff on Monday 17 December 2007 at 10:50 am

We are in the heat of the exam season in HKU. Here are some tips that I use to study.

    1. Use caffeine or some other stimulants, and lots of it. Stay away from depressants like alcohol and sleeping pills.

Many stimulants are actually part of your everyday diet, and it’s ok to use your normal amount. They are necessary for you to stay awake studying for long periods of time. You may then digest the information you need to absorb. The best case scenario is that you stay up so long that you don’t have to wake up for your exam, ‘cos you’re already awake.
If you generally rely on depressants to sleep, try to change a few of daily activities and get a natural downer. Read, stay away from saturated fats and sugar, and get tired before you sleep.

    Use of SMS

Written by Cliff on Saturday 15 December 2007 at 11:29 am

According to a survey in the backwards United States where cell-phone bills are very expensive, 15% of 2,194 people between the ages of 18 and 24 had been dumped through cell phone or email. That raises 2 questions. First is, of course, the high probability of getting dumped when you are a vulnerable teen. The second question, is of course, what does one write in an SMS?

Hi, I won’t be seeing you anymore. Goodbye. John.

On an unrelated note, I personally prefer SMS to voice messages. It takes a shorter time to read. I personally don’t like writing SMS messages. Its a waste of time, unless, of course, the reader is potentially in a meeting and I hate leaving messages because I hate listening to them. I also write SMS when I’m totally freaked out and don’t want to use the phone.

    The Chinese Name

Maybe Viperfusion can be translated, by pronunciation, into:
威化灰塵 or perhaps, simply 威爆。 Then, translated back into English, it can either be: ‘digestive dust’ or ‘exploding glory’.

    Education update

Written by Cliff on Tuesday 11 December 2007 at 11:27 am

Cliffnotes will not be posted regarding PCLL Criminal Litigation due to the singular nature of the examination. Or perhaps due to written premonitions about what will happen if I do received from the post-graduate section of the law faculty / department / school. Or maybe Cliffnotes for the particular subject do not exist.

Update 1: Cliffnotes will be posted for civil litigation in due course.

Update 2: 60 friggin’ pages of Cliffnotes posted for civil litigation in the [Education] page!

Update 3: Faustus, I do have Property Law notes – look in the education page.

    Death by Revision

I recently underwent some diagnosis and found myself to have, potentially, an overactive autonomic nervous system. Apparently, my parasympathetic nervous system had been suppressed for an abnormal amount of time, so, I might actually die. Fortunately, if I remember to do enough breathing exercises and take it easy, i will live.

Symptoms are: floor piled waist deep with papers; cold limbs, hands and feet; discarded stationery overflowing from wastebasket; insomnia; shaky hands; numbness; and swollen glands.

    Farewell for now.

    No Time

Again on Caine Road, I was stopped by the authorities for my ID card. So I asked them on what ground under the PFO they were stopping me for. So the big bald guy replied that my hair was messy and I looked generally unkempt so they held a reasonable suspicion against me. Fair enough, I have spent my time studying for the damm PCLL so why would I have time to groom myself?

So anyway, I said: “Ah sir, give me a chance”. Their eyes lit up like a flash of fire and they immediately surrounded me and started calling HQ. They were quite uneasy as I put my hand in my pocket to take my wallet out. I showed them my HKID, they reported back and found out that I had been stopped at the same location many times before.

Too bad. I don’t have time to make my own bail application, otherwise, I would certainly have stood down a little longer. Maybe I’d even follow them off the the station…

    Respectful Opinion?

“All that has been achieved by the work is the settling of pleadings followed by discovery in what seems to us to be a case which involves no legal complexity. In his skeleton bill of costs, [•] asserted that he instructed leading and junior counsel because ‘the case possesses a combination of commercial importance, pecuniary magnitude, bulk and complexity both as to law and facts.’ In our respective opinion, it does not say much for [•]‘s professional experience that he regarded the case as one of legal complexity.

    It clearly is not.”
